Boy oh, Game Boy

Game BoyMost of the blogs I am reading these days are making a big stink about the Game Boy turning 20, as they should be. I thought I would write a lil’ something, something as well because it did have an impact on my life when I was growing up. For the first couple of systems I owned I was about a generation behind by the time I got it. My NES was a hand-me-down from my cousins and I didn’t get a SNES until quite a bit after it’s release. At the time I was quite oblivious to any real gaming news. My cousins who lived in New York were my source for all things video games. As far as I knew they were the best players around and had the inside info on all the latest games. One of their trips when they came to visit they brought along their Game Boy with Mario Land 2 and Tetris and let me have a go with it. I was blow the hell away. My tiny adolescent mind could not comprehend what I was doing. I was playing NES quality games (sans color) without being tied to grid or a TV. It was a spiritual moment for me. From that moment on I think the only things that came out of my mouth were, “Hey Mom, could I get a Game Boy?” That following birthday my consistent nagging finally awarded me with a shiny new Game Boy and a copy of Super Mario Land 2. That was the first new game system I had every received. That system got me through so many hard car trips and waiting rooms. If we were going anywhere that even sounded remotely boring, the Game Boy came too. After I became more hardcore into Video Games the Game Boy and I had a little falling out. I flipped in on every once in a while, but it mainly sat there collecting dust, and by collecting dust I mean sealed away in a container to protect it from the elements. I am very careful with my stuff.

Pokemon Blue

In comes this new craze called Pokemon. Holy crap, Pokemon. That dominated about three years of my youth and made my Game Boy the number one attention hog for a while. I am glad it was not only me. All my friends caught on to. Recess meant link-cables would be flying all around. This is the first time I felt the magnitude of Game Boy. I don’t want this entry to shift towards Pokemon, but I can’t see how it didn’t lift sales across the board. Everyone had one. Even girls! That began my lifelong obsession with finding a girl who actually liked Video Games. Just for those out there wondering. They still elude me.

Anyway, the Game Boy is forever cemented in my mind as the system that brought Video Games into everyday life. It was possible to go somewhere and game without boundaries, provided you had 4 AA batteries. As a testament to it’s quality, my original Game Boy still works without fail almost 17 years later. Thanks Nintendo, and thanks Game Boy!

Welcome to the World of Mother 3

Mother 3 baby!

It took a while. It went through a couple hiccups, but it’s finally here. The Mother 3 fan translation was released on Friday, October 17, 2008. I would like to say this is going to make soing homework just that much harder. I would like to thank the entire Mother 3 translation team. I have followed along every step of the way and they have gone through some nasty bugs and overcome them all. I will toast them with my heartiest wine.

For those of you unaware of what Mother 3 even is, it’s the sequel to Earthbound. Now, “What is Earthbound”, you ask while Satan is inventing a new ring of hell reserved for the people unaware of this gaming masterpiece. Earthbound, or Mother 2 as it’s now in Japan, is an RPG for SNES, but it is far more than just a game. It had so much depth and originality. It was quirky, funny, and frankly weird at times. I mean just look at the loyal fan base. Nintendo had no plans of localizing it so a ragtag bunch of indiviuals took it upon themselves to localize it. They don’t get money or fame, they do it for the love of the game. Anyway, I am ranting. If you haven’t played Earthbound, you really should do something nice for yourself for once and play it. After you do that head over to http://mother3.fobby.net/ and download the fan translation. I am just so excited about this! I will let you know how the game is as I progress, but so far it is just as oddly charming and esoteric as the original.

Play Earthbound.

It’s a Good Day

Lets start off by saying that hell is feeling a might chilly today. Can you guess why? Well if you haven’t heard (or cared to hear) Final Fantasy XIII is coming to Xbox 360. I honestly didn’t think it would happen; Sony is known for having an iron grip on its franchise exclusives. I will tell you that I couldn’t be more excited. I have been a fan of the series for quite some time now and I thought I might have to miss out this console generation. Square Enix and Microsoft came through for me. I haven’t been so into an E3 for about 4 years since they began cutting down. It is good to feel the anticipation is back.

Here is the E3 Trailer of Final Fantasy XIII

In other news my favorite video game of all time is getting a DS remake. It is basically the same game it was on the SNES, but with dual screen functionality and it’s portable. I guess they are tossing in a few added goodies as well. I can’t tell you how excited about this. I mean this game is the pincacle of gaming for me. It has a deep story, all the characters have depth and with many multiple endings it takes away some of the linearity that Squenix RPGs are known for. Squenix is really getting on my good side lately.

Squee!

With all this video game news I thought it would be a good time to post pics of my painted 360 faceplate. I decided my all white 360 was in need of a face lift. I decided the theme would be the Rebel Alliance from Star Wars (like that took any time to decide.

Here is the inspiration. A rebel flag.

I decided to flesh out the image and see if I could transfer the general idea to the faceplate. Here is the mock up image.

After two weeks and many, many coats of paints. I arrived at my finished product. I am happy with the way it turned out. What do you guys think?

A couple posts back I mentioned my self improvement plan via Excel and I promised to post results of my progress. I have been keeping up with it I promise. The results with grades are…sub-par to say the least, but at least it shows improvement. I would also like to say that I have not bit my nails for an entire week, and I will say that I am starting to get the shakes. I am going to get a manicure if I can break it. I know that sounds a little girly, but I don’t care. These nails have gone through hell over these past 20 years and they deserve a little pampering.

Range··························Percentage······Grade
6/30/2008 – 7/6/2008·····54.17%···········F
7/6/2008 – 7/13/2008·····64.58%···········F

The last thing I have to post is a picture I took while picking up milk at Meijer today. There is just something wrong with the sales pitch.

*Edit*
I watched serenity last night and there is a tremendously bad ass scene at the end with a finish pose that was begging to be made into a wallpaper, so I did just that. It’s in wide screen only right now, but request if you would like a different aspect ratio.
